When Life’s A Real Pain in the Back

We here at Sandstone Chiropractic have seen back pain that is short-term or acute, lasting for a few days or weeks. But we’ve also seen chronic back pain that can last for three months or even longer.

Back Pain Causes

From swinging golf clubs to weeding the garden, hauling groceries to sleeping on an unfamiliar mattress, back pain can come from a variety of causes.

  • Disc degeneration: When intervertebral discs lose fluid and flexibility, they lose their ability to properly cushion the spine and ensure optimum nerve communication. Disc degeneration is often part of the aging process.
  • Sciatica: Back pain, accompanied by pain down the leg, is often the result of a compressed sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down the back of each leg.
  • Sprains and strains: Abrupt movements, twisting, and lifting heavy objects can all contribute to sprains and strains of muscles or ligaments, a common cause of acute lower back pain.

Traumatic injury: Auto accidents, falls and sports mishaps can result in severe back pain.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 At times, the activities you   Back Pain Prevention                                                                                                                                                                                                                               most enjoy can cause                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   back pain.

Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight can go a long way toward preventing back pain, as excess weight can cause back strain. Being in shape can also help prevent injuries that may result from vigorously engaging in sports to which your body is not accustomed.

Maintaining proper posture while walking and sitting is another preventative measure, as is proper lifting of heavy objects. Start in a squatting position, letting your legs do the work instead of your back.

Regular chiropractic care at our Magnolia or Montgomery clinics can also help keep your back strong, healthy and less prone to bouts of pain. Call Sandstone or schedule your comprehensive exam with x-rays online.
