Neck Pain: One Area Where Men and Women are Not Equal

A new study says women are 1.38 times more likely to develop CDD than men.

When it comes to talent, skills and intelligence, we here at Sandstone Chiropractic say men and women can definitely be equals. But there’s one area where women seem to consistently rank higher than men, and that’s when it comes to neck pain.

Women suffer more neck pain than men, information that was brought to light in a study out of Loyola University. The study said the reason women suffer more neck pain than men is because women appear more prone to Cervical Degenerative Disc disease (CDD).

The Study

Study researchers spent two years examining more than 3,300 men and women, finding that 133 patients suffered from CDD; 91 of them were female. Of the patients in the study:

  • 4.5 percent of women reported neck pain
  • 3.3 percent of men reported neck pain

The study thus concluded women were 1.38 times more likely to develop CDD than men.

Higher rates of CDD in women may be attributed to two factors. One is the hormonal changes women undergo that may contribute to the disease. The other is the fact that men are less likely to report pain, therefore never receiving a proper diagnosis of CDD.

What is CDD?

Cervical Degenerative Disc disease is a disorder in which the discs in the spine slowly deteriorate over time, losing proper function and flexibility. Common symptoms of CDD include:

  • Headaches
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Weakness in the arms, neck or shoulders

If you’re experiencing neck pain or any symptoms related to CDD, ignoring the symptoms may lead to bigger health problems in the long run. Call Sandstone or schedule your comprehensive exam with x-rays online so we can establish a customized treatment plan for correction and relief.
